The Streamys deserve a chance to succeed
Somehow I missed Matt’s article in defense of the Streamy Awards when he posted it last week. He makes a lot of good points and I agree that much of the criticism coming out is unwarranted and unjustly harsh.
Putting together a show like this is a huge endeavor. So much so that it almost warrants a free pass the first time around. As Schlomo pointed out, there has never been a “2nd” annual awards for online video. There’s a reason for that.
Yes, I still have some reservations about the Streamys and the IAWTV, some of which I posted here, and later discussed privately with friends. It gets sticky for me, because I know some of the organizers & academy members personally, and because I produced a show nominated in 2 Streamy categories. Regardless, I think the Streamy organizers deserve the benefit of the doubt, and more importantly, all of us deserve a chance to celebrate.
So yes, I’ll be there Saturday to support EPIC FU, my friends and colleagues, and all of the incredibly hard-working people who are shaping the future of entertainment. I also want the Streamys to be a huge success, because it’s important for our industry. Whether or not it’s a huge success out of the gate is less important to me than the sentiment behind it, and the potential for what it might become.
* Okay okay, one complaint. It frustrates me that this promotional video touts the Streamys as the “first ever award show for web television series.” Come on, guys.
